Pentecost Sunday falls this year on May 15. But many people, including Christians, may not know why the day is special or what is celebrated.

The Biblical narrative of Pentecost is given in the second chapter of the Book of Acts. Present were about one hundred and twenty followers of Christ (Acts 1:15) , including the Apostles (Acts 1:13, 26) , his mother Mary, various other women disciples and his brothers (Acts 1:14) .

Their reception of the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room is recounted in Acts 2:1–6:

The Coming of the Holy Spirit
2 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested[a] on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.

Pentecost is about the Spirit of God coming into your spirit, filling and baptizing you with His very own Spirit. God desires to fill the deepest part of you, your spirit.

Depression, doubt and fear comes out of your spirit, when it encounters this world. Your spirit alone cannot handle the floods of this world. What your spirit encounters is then transmitted to your emotions, mind and behavior. But, God’s Spirit controls this vast, deep battleground of the soul and spirit.

Psalm 9:5-7
5 The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. 6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice.

Our spirit longs for the Spirit of God as He calls to our spirit to be filled with His Spirit.

Psalm 42:1-2
1 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

Joel prophesied that there were be terrible challenges, just as we encounter today. (Joel 1:2-7). But life for those Longing-Joel prophesied that it would be the Spirit of God that would be the source for God’s people, to bring to life, the war with the destructiveness of the enemy. (Joel2:18-32)

Our body is in service to our spirit that is why God’s Spirit wants to fill our spirit so that we can live as God gives us His Spirit; the process is just like getting the air that we need to breathe or getting the water that we need to drink. If our spirit is hurt, dry or out of breath, our emotions, mind, heart and behavior will be hurt, dry or without life.

Genesis 2:7
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

God’s breath is His Spirit. His Spirit gives us life and continues to give life to heart, mind, emotions and behavior.

John 7:37-39
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

When there is longing for the depth of the Spirit. The life that the Spirit gives to our mind, heart, emotions and behavior is eternal, the new heaven and earth, where the Spirit is ultimately taking us

Joel 2:28-32

The LORD Will Pour Out His Spirit
28 [a] “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit. 30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the LORD has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the LORD calls.
