Word of God by Pastor Nick Esguerra

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved.

The Apostle Paul in this chapter reveals the redemptive plan of God. A plan always convey the need and purpose, it states the things to be done in addressing the need, and the outcome or goal to be achieve. Paul reveals the need of redemption and the progress of salvation in a person’s life. It gives light to our former way of life, our present condition in the plan of God and the goal of redemption.

Before focussing to the truth of being made alive in Christ, it is important to highlight who we are before. Our former way of life and how we walked convey the need for us to be made alive in Christ. The fact that we are made alive reveals that we were dead before.

We were dead in our trespasses and sins (v.1)

  • The Book of Romans said that all of us sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.

  • The penalty of sin is death.

Our former way of life and deeds brought death in us (v.2-5)

  • We lived and walked according to the course of this world (v.2a)

  • We lived and walked according to the god of this world (v.2b)

  • We lived and walked according to the spirit of this world (v.2c)

What kind of spirit is working in the world?

  • Spirit of disobedience (sons of disobedience) this explains why it is easy to disobey God.

  • Spirit of wrath (children of wrath)

  • John 8:44 – The devil as father of people living in disobedience & wrath.

We lived and walked according to the sinful nature (v.3)

  • Sinful nature: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (live outside of God)

Even we walked according to our former way of life while we were dead in transgression, God who is rich in mercy and great love made us alive in Christ.

  • God’s great mercy and love can be seen in the phrase “while we were dead in transgressions”.

  • How is it to be made alive in Christ?

  • We were dead in our transgressions and sins but God made us alive in Christ. We were living in this former way of life so why go back to that old life.

  • Made alive in Christ

  • God saved us from sin

  • God raised us up with Christ

  • God seated us with Christ in the heavenly places

  • Be where Christ is

  • Be citizens of above

  • Be in the kingdom of God

What is the purpose why God made us alive in Christ? (v.7)

  • He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness in Christ Jesus.

Christ redemption does not only achieve personal results in us when He made us alive but also in the overall plan of God in redeeming mankind.

  • Christ’s death abolishes the enmity and dividing wall between the Jews and Gentiles.

  • Christ’s death brought peace and reconciliation by putting to death the enmity through the cross.

  • Christ’s death gave us same access in one Spirit to the Father.

  • Christ’s death causes us to become citizens and saints of the kingdom and members of God’s household.
